Vol. 1, Number 3                                                                                                                                  21 August 2006

Hello, My Friends!

This "job" is the best!! I have heard from friends ('60 and '61) whom I haven't talked to in many years.  Since the reunion is just a week away, I want to share some "snippets" of these emails with all of you. Future issues will feature the "rest of the story." But before I write anymore, I can't help myself...I have to give all of you who live in, or close to, Cincinnati a "half-Jewish mother" guilt trip.  WHERE ARE YOU?????  So many of your friends are traveling great distances to be with YOU, yes YOU!!  Bill Curry ...WA, Keith Humphries...AZ, Eddie Southard...KS, Joanne Jaeger...FL, Sue Garner...VT, Bruce Baum...NY, Mitch Goldberg...way up in Akron, and Jack Shaw is driving himself in his specially equipped van all the way from Florida.  This is just a sampling of the classmates who want to visit with you...and each other. Don't let them down...you still have time to register at www.woodwardclassof61.com.

Now that you will be with us, be sure to talk to Dr. John Labavitch about his job as a professor at the University of CA, Davis, where  he has taught in the Plant Science department for over 30 years.  He, his colleagues and his students study how plants carry out important aspects of their lives.  More about John will follow in the winter issue.

Rosemary Eng emailed while visiting Peggy Rosenberg Champin in WA. She made the 8-hour trip by Amtrak, car, and ferry to reach the Champins' home on the Olympic Peninsula. Neither is able to join us,  but they wish everyone well and hope to see lots of photos on the web site.

Karla Goodpasture Stannard left Cincinnati in 1962 to marry her sweetheart, Rex. Karla said they flunked retirement  (1999, near Dale Hollow Lake) and are now "trying to make a difference in our little corner of the world." More later.

Linda Schwartz Katzper loves the web site. She is sad she's missing the 45th and won't be able to visit with you and the teachers. Linda lives in the DC area, where she met her husband. She works in information technology for the Federal Government (NIH). Linda votes for ALL of Bruce Baum's title suggestions.  That is good because no one else has even tried to be creative!

Paul Crosson, the Minister of Music and Associate Pastor of Tri County Baptist Church for 33 years, regrets that he and Barb are unable to attend. Regards from Paul to all who remember him.

Mary Jo Barnard Morgan is enjoying the newsletter and sends blessings to all.

Evie Spiegel, Mill Valley, CA, won't be here but would love to catch up on what's happening. As she read the list of the classmates who are registered, "I had to smile at some of the names...memory flashes."

Rita Wasserman Solko, a Roselawn grad along with Evie, is very ACTIVE in the "beautiful, active adult community" in Gilbert, AZ. Rita and Louis have 2 grandchildren living in Hyde Park. Don't you want to sneak in an extra visit next week, Rita? We would love to see you, if not now, at the big 5-0!

Joanne Jaeger Webb and her husband, Bob, have celebrated the last 30 Thanksgivings with Doug and Leslie (Wacksman '64) Loveless in TN. Look for their picture, soon to be on the website. Jo spoke with Jane Shapiro Rosenbaum and told us that Jane is a writer who specializes in policy writing and ghost writing speeches for politicians. She is working on a novel and has sold a screenplay. Janie hopes to be able to pull away from an important charity event to visit with old friends for a while.

Annette Margolis Klein and Chuck ('60), her husband for 10 years, are still trying to get Herb Margolis to register for the reunion. I am not sure of the status of their effort, but I am sure many of us hope to see Herb and Diane. Annette also relayed the message that Betsy Bohlander Bazell is currently working at the Ronald McDonald House in Cincinnati.  Chuck has forwarded our newsletter to the class of  '60, which led to an email from Barry Ross. Barry hopes to see many "old people" Friday night. Check out his photographs at www.barryrossphotos.com.  Maybe we can provide Barry with a few photo opps at the Beer Sellar!

A number of football players corrected the bio of Jack "Bear" Campbell. He was a guard for the Cincinnati Bearcats, class of 1954. Chris Merkel said it's been rumored that this guard was so aggressive that his helmet was hidden to keep him off of the field if his famous coach, Sid Gilman, did not want him to play! Chris also said, "Those of us who were UC grads are not fond of OSU!"

Darrell and Joyce Watson would love to be at the 45th, but are unable to attend due to a much more important commitment. Joyce wrote, "Our Marine grandson, Donovan Watson, age 19, will be home before leaving for Iraq.  All thoughts and prayers for him would be greatly appreciated. We really enjoyed the 40th and hope to be at the 50th."  Joyce and Darrell, I know I can say "thank you " to Donovan from all of us, and he will most certainly be in our thoughts and prayers as he continues to fight for our country.

Again, there is much more I have to say, but it will wait until after the reunion. I hope the next newsletter, which will recap all of the fun we had at our 45th, will have everyone thinking, "I can't wait until 2011 when I’ll be celebrating my 50th high school reunion with many good friends!"

I will leave you with a thought-provoking question from Warren Gifford..."Does Bill Curry (I mean Curly) still have the rubber hammer?"

Until next time, I am

Your Friend,

Patty
